Today’s blog post is dedicated to two special ladies in my family—one of whom is my grandmother, and the other of whom is her fellow Rust College alumna and my honorary auntie.
Yes, I am referring to my Gramma Jewel and my Auntie Gladys.

It was on September 4, 1953 that these two ladies became the best of friends, having met on the campus of Rust College three weeks prior to their friendship and sisterhood becoming official. Yes, y’all—Gramma Jewel and Auntie Gladys have been best friends for 60 years!
I talked to Auntie Gladys last night after my 6pm class, and she told me how she had just spoken with Gramma Jewel earlier in the day. The first thing Auntie Gladys said to me was: “I can’t believe that I’ve known your grandmother for 60 years—that damn near our whole lives—but then again, someone had to be your grandmother’s best friend because she was lookin’ so lonely and pitiful… I’m just sayin’!”
Obviously Gramma Jewel and Auntie Gladys have been poking fun at each other for years, but that’s the mark of a good strong true friendship. If you can’t poke fun at each other, then you’re just mere acquaintances—and that might explain why Ruby and I get along so well… hahaha!
Here it is, 60 years later, and we’re celebrating a friendship that has truly withstood the test of time. All I have to say is: Congratulations to Gramma Jewel and Auntie Gladys for reaching such a pivotal milestone in their lives. I guess that old saying still rings true: In this life, you have more acquaintances than you do friends. Well, there’s no doubt that Gramma Jewel and Auntie Gladys have not only epitomized but also redefined the meaning of true friendship. Heck, I have reason to believe that they were the inspiration behind the term “BFF.”

And with that said, I would like to dedicate this song to their friendship.
Hugs & Kisses,
Natasha
