I think the title of today’s blog is self-explanatory, but I still gotta go ahead and say it: I want to wish a very Happy 33rd Wedding Anniversary to my godparents Bret & Susie Douglas, affectionately known to me as Mr. & Mrs. D!
I consider Mr. & Mrs. D to be the sweetest, dearest, cutest, and corniest couple that I can personally know—and that’s saying a whole lot, considering that my mom and dad are pretty corny themselves. Anyway, Mr. & Mrs. D tied the knot on July 12, 1980, and ever since then, their marriage has exemplified the lyrics of that legendary Ashford & Simpson song. Yes, y’all—Mr. & Mrs. D’s marriage has been solid as a rock, and the their thrill is still “hot-hot-hot-hot-hot-hot-hot-hot.”
Mr. & Mrs. D’s marriage is so cute and inspirational because it really reminds me of a romantic comedy with a touch—just a touch—of drama. Mr. D was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Mrs. D (whose maiden name is Gosinheimer) is a native New Yorker. Both met on the campus of South Carolina University during the 1977-78 school year. As fate would have it, they literally bumped into each other at a college assembly.
By the way: I know this story almost word-for-word on account of I’ve heard it so many times, and it’s still really, really sweet.
In any event, while they were in college, Mrs. D developed feelings for Mr. D, but she thought that he already had a girlfriend. Well, as it turned out, the “other woman” was Mr. D’s adopted baby sister. It would’ve been easy for Mr. D to rub it in, but instead he forgave her error, and even admitted that he thought she was “the bee’s knees.” And from what Mrs. D told me, she couldn’t have married a better man that her “lovable Bret-Honey.” Likewise, Mr. D has stated boldly that he can’t see life without his “Sweet Little Susie.”
I told y’all that they were cornballs, but it’s so cute! As a matter of fact, I have witnessed for myself the many times that Mr. & Mrs. D have their cute little moments. Mrs. D will say: “Hey, Handsome!” to which Mr. D will say: “Hey, Gorgeous!” And then Mrs. D starts giggling like Betty Rubble, which leads to Mr. D kissing her sweetly on the lips, and Mrs. D pretends to faint in his arms. Even though I’m not married, I know how Mrs. D feels on account of the way that Ray kissed me during the Christmas break—it’s something that I honestly cannot describe… but I digress!
As usual, the best way for me to find a perfect way to show my love to Mr. & Mrs. D is through song, and seeing as how they love them some Ashford & Simpson, I’m gonna go ahead and dedicate “Solid” to their 33 years of marriage.
Once again, Happy 33rd Anniversary to my favorite cutesy cornball couple Mr. & Mrs. D! May The Lord continue to bless and keep your marriage on this day, tomorrow, and forever more!
Hugs & Kisses,
Natasha
